1. Reflection on Theory as Liberatory Practice

           From Theory as Liberatory Practice, 1991
My theoretical inspiration comes from Bell Hooks's article, *Theory as Liberatory Practice*. She challenged the then-predominantly white academic community with an unconventional narrative and stated at the beginning of the article, "I came to theory because I was hurting." This reminded me of my own experience as a new immigrant in Canada and the emotional journey it evoked. This led me to a series of practices aimed at supporting those who have shared similar experiences.
